CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

ALTHOUGH ARCHIBALD HAD given her the address, Esuries would've found the Four Horsemen's home with ease, anyway. Trails of magic were scattered throughout the city like breadcrumbs and they all led back to the imposing property. She scouted the building, long limbs creeping around well-pruned shrubs and flowerbeds, and found the residents deep in conversation when she peered through a window. The power of those creatures was obvious; an ancient magic at least as old as her own. How had they not come to her attention sooner? She almost fell backwards in shock when she saw what one of them held in his hands. Archibald was right. How had they come by the bauble? She must've left one behind somewhere, an act so foolish it was almost human. Perhaps she'd spent too long imitating them. Does form influence behaviour?

Esuries soon forgot these matters when the little girl appeared, her power flooding Esuries's senses and overwhelming her thoughts. The child shone like a beacon, drawing the creature in. She was what Esuries had waited for all those hungry, interminable centuries living hand to mouth. Her head was still spinning, drunk on the energy the child gave out, when another female entered the room. Nothing special about this one, though; dull and lifeless as the majority of her species. Esuries slunk beneath the window. She'd never taken so many at once, but would allow herself to be greedy this one time. She would have four now and was already making plans for the youngest. That supernova energy would be a special treat. A life-changing opportunity. And not just for Esuries.

As she moved to the front of the house, she wondered what form she would take. She was often surprised by the vastness of the human imagination and the distance between their place in the world and what they ultimately desired. Giddy and nervous as a child sneaking out for a midnight feast, she took a moment to compose herself. Then, Esuries knocked on the front door.
